Archived from groups: comp.security.firewalls Hi.I've been trying to upgrade my Kerio PFW from v 4.2.0 to 4.2.1. I'vedone this several times before with updates on my Windows 2000 Pro on acable internet connection and this is my first problem besides theoccasional bonehead move like not having my modem turned on.Clicking on the download file seems to start the install normally but about2/3 the way through 'removing old applications' I get an error popup.
'Thefeature you are trying to use is on a network resource that isunavailable' Below that is another message and a window. 'Click OK toretry and/or enter in the window the full path to 'Kerio PersonalFirewall.msi'. The window shows the path to that exact file already.Clicking OK produces another error notice stating in effect 'The msi filesubmitted is not a valid Kerio PFW installation file'. Closing the installgives a final error notice. 'error 1714.The older version of KPF cannot beremoved.' I've tried re-downloading and doing the install with differing combos ofbeing on or off line and with KPFW turned on or off with no difference.
Itried a manual remove of KPFW using their site directions again with nodifference. The Kerio app has all 'permits' for internet connection.I suspect something in Windows has been messed up because I've tried re-installing the same 4.2.0 version with the same results (bless backups). All my searches have turned up is comments on KPFW's 2006 end and how manylike older versions anyway.
Suggestion for a fix or for reading would beapreciated. Regards, Nick.

Regards, NickI don't know if this will help or not but I have always been underthe impression that all nonessential software should be off wheninstalling new software. In fact, I use a utility called 'End-It-All'to turn off the nonessentials during new installations. The reason, as I understand it, is you don't want anything writeingto disk when you are writing new software.Casey. Microsoft has a program on theirsite that will remove all references to a certain program from theRegistry. It's 'msicuu2.exe'.
You can do the same thing, just type'Regedit' in the RUN box and search for and delete all Registryentries that refer to Kerio. Then run your install program again andeverything should be fine.Jack.

Of the files, fwdrv.sys andfwdrv.vxd, I could only find the first but since it said 'if found', Ifigured that was OK. I did follow your suggestion and search theregistry for other references to the program and only found an entry forthe driver file, fwdrv.sys, which I removed hoping that it was the silverbullet.
Not so, I still get the same error flags. Thanks anyway. The failure to remove the existing v 4.2.0 lay in theappropriate 'Kerio Personal Firewall.msi file not being where Windowsexpected it to be located.
In trying to resolve this by entering thepath to that file I was mistakenly entering the path to the new install v4.2.1 'Kerio Personal Firewall.msi' file. Yes, they have the same nameand obviously they are different! Not that it is an excuse.
I shouldhave been more careful. Anyway using the correct path allowed v 4.2.0 toremoved by Add/Remove Programs and installing the new version was assmooth as always.Phew!!
